My connector is cracked, and therefore finicky. It wasn't making good contact for a couple weeks (idle would plummet when I clutched in, revs dropping super low and bouncing back just before stalling, etc). The result was that if the car was warm it would start right up (1/2 second cranking) and immediately blip to 1500-2000 before swinging back down and stalling due to no idle control. For cold starts it took extra cranking to get it to start...but we're talking about "duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh" (say 1.5 seconds cranking, otherwise it would die) instead of the usual "duh-duh-duh". Probably not your issue, but thought I'd post it since it sounds like you have a more severe version.
